Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Improve Well-Being and Productivity in Sow Barns

June 5, 2024
New project underway at CDPQ! AI-based tools and systems tailored to producers' needs for managing sows in sow barns will be developed and tested in four areas:

  • Precision insemination for gilts
  • Assessment of sow body condition using digital imaging
  • Impact of social interactions during gestation
  • Detection of the start of farrowing and potential lactation issues using sensors

Under the responsibility of Patrick Gagnon at CDPQ and carried out at our research and education sow barn in Armagh, this project is funded by the Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network (CAAIN) with financial contributions from the Canadian Pork Council (CPC), Pig Improvement Company (PIC), and AcuFast. Collaborators: Canadian Centre for Swine Improvement (CCSI), Ro-main, Jyga Technologies, Laval University.
